Yerevan, Oct 13 (IBNS): Former Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean has lost her bid to become the la Francophonie Secretary General for the second consecutive term.

Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo has been selected as the new Secretary General of the organisation.

Jean was the Secretary General since 2014.

The former Canadian Governor General lost her bid after Canada reportedly withdrawn its support from Jean.

Following Jean's win, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hailed the former for her "leadership".

Trudeau tweeted, ".@MichaelleJeanF, thank you for your leadership and tireless efforts to advance women's rights, girls’ education, youth empowerment, and so much more."

The Prime Minister also vowed to work Mushikiwabo.

Trudeau tweeted, "The @OIFfrancophonie has picked a new Secretary General, @LMushikiwabo. Canada looks forward to working with her to advance our priorities for La Francophonie."
