Washington, May 4 (Sputnik/UNI) Four people have been hospitalized following an explosion at a chemical plant in the US city of Waukegan, Illinois, local media reported on Saturday, citing the spokesman for the Waukegan Fire Department.

The explosion hit the AB Speciality Silicones plant late on Friday local time.

It was reportedly heard across the Lake County at around 9.45 p.m. (02:45 Saturday GMT). The reason behind the incident remains unclear.

"We have fire and structural damage indicative of an explosion ... There is very heavy damage," Steve Lenzi said, as quoted by the Chicago Tribune newspaper.

Firefighters, police and paramedic personnel are working at the site. Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham arrived there as well. Firefighters are currently trying to find out how many people were present at the plant when the explosion took place.
