Tehran/IBNS: Israel Defence Minister Israel Katz said the country launched a “pre-emptive strike” on Iran early Saturday morning, media reports said.

Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA confirmed explosions in the capital, Tehran, reporting thick smoke rising from central parts of the city.

According to IRNA, the explosions were heard at two separate locations in Tehran.

Some media reports claimed it was a joint attack by Israel and the United States.

Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been shifted to a safe place, CNN reported.

Israel has also declared a state of emergency in anticipation of possible retaliatory strikes from Iran, according to media reports.

The situation marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the two regional rivals, raising fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

Why did Israel attack Iran?

Pre-emptive strike: Israel said it attacked to prevent an imminent threat from Iran.

Nuclear threat fears: Israel believes Iran is moving closer to developing nuclear weapons, which it sees as an existential threat.

Missile and drone capabilities: Iran has long-range missiles and drones capable of striking Israeli cities.

Iran’s support for anti-Israel groups: Iran backs armed groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, which Israel considers major security threats.

Rising regional tensions: Ongoing hostility, intelligence warnings, and recent escalations increased fears of a possible Iranian attack.

Strategic military objective: Israel aims to weaken Iran’s military infrastructure and prevent future attacks.

Long-standing rivalry: Israel and Iran have been adversaries for decades, with deep political, military, and ideological conflict.
