Israeli airstrikes targeted Gandhi Hospital in Tehran on Sunday, Iranian media reported, as tensions in the Middle East continued to escalate.

Iran’s state news agency Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) shared footage on X showing apparent damage to the hospital building.

The video showed shattered glass and visible structural damage inside the facility. The extent of casualties, if any, was not immediately known.

IRNA captioned the footage: “The situation at Gandhi Hospital in Tehran following the American-Israeli aggression.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) earlier announced that it had launched fresh strikes on what it described as targets linked to the “Iranian terror regime” in the heart of Tehran.

“For the first time since the start of Operation ‘Roaring Lion’, the Israeli Air Force is striking targets belonging to the Iranian terror regime in the heart of Tehran,” the IDF said in a post on X.

The latest operation came hours after Iran confirmed that its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed on Saturday during a joint US-Israeli strike inside Iranian territory. Iranian state media reported that Khamenei was killed in his office in Tehran during coordinated airstrikes.

Meanwhile, Iran has appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi to its interim leadership council following Khamenei’s death.

According to reports, the council will also include President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. The body is expected to govern the country until the Assembly of Experts selects a permanent Supreme Leader.

What is Gandhi Hospital?

According to its official website, Gandhi Hospital is part of the Gandhi Hotel-Hospital complex, which spans more than 32,000 square metres in Tehran.

Established in 2008 by a consortium of national and international medical experts, the facility has developed into one of Iran’s notable centres for advanced healthcare and medical tourism.

The 22-storey complex integrates diagnostic, treatment and accommodation services under one roof and is designed to meet international hospital and hospitality standards.

The hospital has a capacity of 100 inpatient beds and 40 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, along with 17 modern operating theatres.

In addition to its clinical infrastructure, the complex includes 100 residential suites intended to provide accommodation for patients and their families during extended treatment periods.
