| @indiablooms | Jul 02, 2022, at 08:28 pm

Colombo/UNI: Japan has said that it will continue to support development activities in Sri Lanka, a day after Tokyo's envoy was quoted as saying that it will not be possible to provide further economic aid to the economically-beleaguered country.

Japanese Ambassador Mizukoshi Hideaki gave his assurance to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa here on Friday, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported on Saturday.

The President's Media Division quoted the diplomat as saying that "continuous efforts will be made to further strengthen the economic, social and cultural relations with Sri Lanka".

The President expressed his deep appreciation to Japan for supporting Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Embassy said on its FaceBook page that Japan was closely paying attention to the current difficult economic situation in Sri Lanka.

It said that Japan has decided to provide Emergency Grant Aid of $3 million through United Nations International Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) and World Food Programme (WFP) in order to provide medicine and food to the Sri Lankan people.
