New York lorry attacker Sayfullo Saipov pleads not guilty

New York City, Nov 29 (IBNS): The man who attacked and killed at least eight people and injured 12 others in New York's Manhattan area in October after ploughing through a crowd using a truck, has pleaded not guilty, reports said.

Sayfullo Saipov, who was arrested from the scene, filed his plea in the federal court on Tuesday.

He had migrated to USA from Uzbekistan in 2010.

The Manhattan attack was deemed the worst after the infamous 9/11 attacks.

Even though he pleaded not guilty through his court appointed lawyer, opposition lawyers stated how he bragged about the murders later, while receiving treatment in a facility.

Saipov faces 22 murder and terrorism charges, including providing help to Islamic State.

US President Donald Trump has urged the law for a capital punishment for Saipov, and while that is an option, prosecutors are yet to deliver a verdict.

According to investigators, the attacker was inspired by propaganda videos and reportedly bragged about feeling good about what he had done.

His next hearing is scheduled for Jan 23.
