No foreign leaders to be invited for Imran's swearing-in
Islamabad, Aug 2 (IBNS): No foreign leader will be invited for Imran Khan’s swearing-in as Pakistan’s next prime minister, media reports said.
Geo News quoted Tehrik-I-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry as saying that the country’s Foreign Office had advised against inviting foreign dignitaries for the ceremony expected to be held on August 11.
"We will not invite any foreign dignitaries," he said.
Chaudhry said the ceremony will be held at the Presidency in Islamabad, and not in an open space as Imran Khan wanted earlier.
As per Chaudhry, Imran Khan has decided to keep the ceremony 'extremely simple' and not 'ostentatious', and will be a 'purely national event'.
He said only select friends of Khan, such as former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Navjot Singh Sidhu, and actor Aamir Khan, have been invited to the swearing-in
Khan will be the 20th Prime Minister of Pakistan. His party, the PTI, has emerged the single largest party in the National Assembly but it is still in talks with several smaller parties and independent candidates to secure the required numbers to form the government.
Chaudhry had on Wednesday said PTI plans to invite former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Navjot Sidhu and Bollywood star Aamir Khan to the swearing-in.
Media reports had earlier said the party considered inviting leaders of SAARC nations, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China, and Turkey, too.
