Islamabad, Nov 8 (IBNS): In a significant development,  a Pakistani Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy after spending eight years on death row has been freed from prison.

After her release from Multan’s women prison in the light of the Oct 31 Supreme Court verdict overturning her conviction and death sentence, Asia Bibi was brought to Islamabad onboard a special aircraft on Wednesday night, Dawn learnt through reliable sources.

"The aircraft carrying Asia Bibi, whose acquittal of blasphemy charge sparked countrywide protests by religious parties and groups, landed at the old Benazir Bhutto International Airport of Islamabad adjacent to Nur Khan Air Base," reported the newspaper.

the Italian government on Wednesday said it is committed to helping Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi.

The Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation together with Foreign Minister  Enzo Moavero Milanesi, to meet the many requests coming from Italian citizens, continue to closely follow the situation of Ms Asia Bibi in tight cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Pakistan and in constant coordination with all the States involved."

"The Foreign Ministry is ready to act on any decision that the Government may take," said the statement.
