Islamabad, Nov 3 (IBNS): Pakistan's influential religious scholar Maulana Samiul Haq was assassinated at his residence in Rawalpindi city on Friday, media reports said.

Maulana Hamidul Haq, his son, said his octogenarian father was stabbed to death when he was resting in his residence.

"He was trying to reach the protest in Islamabad but came back home due to roads being blocked. He was resting in his room after Asr [prayers] when his driver-cum-guard went out for 15 minutes," Haq's son Maulana Hamidul Haq told Go News.

"When he returned, he found Maulana Samiul Haq dead in his bed and his body covered in blood," he said.

Hamid said his father was 'stabbed multiple times'.

The body of the slain Pakistani religious leader was transported to his native town Akora Khattak through an ambulance.

His funeral prayers will be held in Garrison Ground in Akora Khattak at 3 pm on Saturday.

As per Geo News, Pakistan PM Imran Khan has condemned the death of Maulana Samiul Haq.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa condemned Haq's assassination as an official tweet by DG ISPR Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said: "COAS strongly condemns assassination of renowned religious scholar and political leader Moulana Sami ul Haq. Expresses grief and condolences to the bereaved family."
