Racist yearbook photo row: Virginia Governor Ralph Northam apologises

| @indiablooms | Feb 02, 2019, at 07:18 pm

Washington, Feb 2 (IBNS):  Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has apologised after his yearbook, which is dated back to his student life in 1984, emerged showing a photo featuring men in racist costumes.

"My fellow Virginians, earlier today I released a statement apologizing for behavior in my past that falls far short of the standard you set for me when you elected me to be your governor. I believe you deserve to hear directly from me," Northam tweeted.

The image, which led the Governor to apologise, showed a man in blackface and another man in Ku Klux Klan robes.

As per BBC report, black politicians in Virginia called the image "disgusting" and Republicans urged the Democrat to resign.

In the controversial page, several photos of the Governor could be seen.

Other personal details of the leader could be seen on the page.

The photograph, which was obtained by CNN, appears in the 1984 yearbook for Eastern Virginia Medical School. Northam did not say whether he was wearing the KKK outfit or blackface.

The identities of the people in the photograph are not known.

As per CNN report, the photo appears above Northam's yearbook quote: "There are more old drunks than old doctors in this world so I think I'll have another beer."

The leader was elected as the governor of Virginia in November 2017.
