Berlin/UNI/Sputnik: The recently-appointed 14th German Ambassador to China, Jan Hecker, died at the age of 54, the German Federal Foreign Office said in a statement on Monday morning.

"It is with deep sadness and dismay that we learned of the sudden death of the German Ambassador to China, Prof. (Dr.) Jan Hecker. Our thoughts at this moment are with his family and those who were close to him," the statement says.

Hecker had become an ambassador in August and earlier has served as a foreign policy adviser to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, while also being at the helm of coordinating the Berlin refugee policy between 2015-2017 as the Director of Department of Foreign Policy, Security and Development Policy.

The 54-year-old ambassador was a father of three children. Until last Friday, Heckler seemed in good shape while hosting a gathering that spotlighted German Artist Joseph Beuys in the German Embassy, Beijing.

Circumstances leading to his death haven't been disclosed yet.
