Paris/UNI/Sputnik: The Russian Embassy in France confirmed to Sputnik that a Russian cargo ship was intercepted in the English Channel on Saturday, adding that the consular department requested an explanation from the French authorities.

Earlier in the day, French media reported on the interception of a Russian vessel in the English Channel.

"The embassy got an emergency call from the captain of the Russian cargo ship, in which he reported the interception of the vessel by the French authorities in the English Channel," the embassy said.

The embassy also noted that its consular department had immediately contacted the French authorities to obtain clarification on the issue.

"The results will be announced later," the diplomatic mission said.

At the same time, French radio station France Bleu reported, citing the country's maritime prefecture, that the Russian vessel had a permit to sail in French territorial waters.

According to the radio station, the Russian cargo ship named Baltic Leader was reportedly coming from the French city of Rouen and was transporting cars.
