Seattle, Dec 18 (IBNS): An Amtrak train derailed Monday morning in the state of Washington in United States during its inaugural run in a new route, killing several people, said officials.

The accident occurred near Dupont, Washington, as several cars of the train jumped the track and one dangled off an Interstate 5 overpass precariously. The mishap was reported around 7:30 a.m. (1530 GMT).

In a statement, Amtrak said the train that derailed was Train 501,  operating from Seattle and Portland. It derailed south of Tacoma, Wash.

"There were approximately 78 passengers and five crew members on board. Initial reports are that some injuries are reported to passengers and crew, and taken to local medical facilities for treatment.

"Individuals with questions about their friends and family on this train should call (800) 523-9101.  Local emergency responders are on the scene," said the train company.

"Service from Seattle to points north and east is continuing to operate. Amtrak Cascades Trains 504 and 509 are cancelled. No alternate transportation will be available," it said.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement: "Today's tragic incident in Pierce County is a serious and ongoing emergency. Trudi and I are holding in our hearts everyone on board, and are praying for the many injured. They are our top priority, and I know first responders are doing everything to ensure everyone has the care they need."

Media reports said 77 patients were taken to hospitals in Pierce and Thurston counties, according to CHI Franciscan Health.

Four are considered level red patients with the most severe injuries, it said

The derailment sent at least one car off a bridge onto a crowded highway.

Amtrak passenger Chris Karnes told local news outlet KIRO 7 that passengers were forced to kick out of the train windows in order to escape.

However, the number of deaths are yet to be announced.

According to reports, no motorists were dead but several received injuries.
