Third Canadian arrested over employment issue, says China

| @indiablooms | Dec 20, 2018, at 06:54 pm

Beijing/Ottawa, Dec 20 (IBNS): China on Thursday said the third Canadian has been arrested over an employment issue, media reports said.

Amid growing discord between the two countries, Canada on Wednesday said its third citizen has been detained by China.

The detained has been identified as Sarah McIver, a teacher in China.

China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying has said Mclver received penalty for an illegal employment, CTV News reported.

Days after Chinese telecom company Huawei's executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada, Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat to China, and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur, were detained on suspicion of posing threats to the security of China.

Wanzhou was arrested on Dec 1 as per the requests of the US authorities.

The US claimed that Meng had misled multinational banks over Iran-linked transactions. It also said the CEO had kept the banks in risk of violating US sanctions.

Though Meng was granted a bail, she can still be extradited to the US.

A Canadian government official as well as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said there is no reason to think that the recent incident of detention is linked to the arrests of Kovrig and Spavor.
