Trump letter to Chinese President talks of 'constructive' relations

Washington, Feb 9 (IBNS): US President Donald Trump in a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping said that he looked forward to constructive relations between the two countries, according to media reports on Thursday.

Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, is also the current General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

President Trump also thanked the Chinese President for his "congratulatory letter" on the former's inauguration, media reported.

However, Trump did not call the Chinese President even though he called several other world leaders.

Although the exchange of mails is part of the customary diplomatic protocol, political experts are watching the exchange closely because recently Trump had challenged China on sensitive issues such as the South China Sea and Taiwan.

According to media reports, China was sorely ruffled when Trump took a call from Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, the first ever by a US President or President-elect in decades.
