Ukraine still hopeful about negotiations with US following military aid pause

A top Ukrainian official said on Tuesday that Kyiv is in touch with European allies over military aid supply after the US paused it following a fiery spat between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his American counterpart Donald Trump during a meeting in the White House last week.

He said Ukraine has not stopped overlooking the possibility of negotiations with American counterparts over the issue.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Pdolyak said Ukraine has already faced prolonged suspensions of the US military aid programs and has learned to adapt to such situations.

In an X post, he wrote: " First, it is necessary to assess which specific programs will cease to function, considering that many were already in their final stages. We should also remember that some programs were approved by Congress, which involves a distinct legal procedure."

"Second, we need to evaluate the possibility of purchasing or acquiring equivalents from our European partners, especially since replacement programs are already in operation," he said.

Mykhailo Pdolyak further said: "Third, let’s not forget that #Ukraine has already experienced prolonged suspensions of #US military aid programs and has learned to adapt to such situations."

Ukraine Military Aid Paused

The Donald Trump administration has paused military aid to Ukraine, days after President Zelenskyy got involved in a fiery verbal spat with the US President during their meeting in the White House.

“The president has been clear that he is focused on peace,” a White House official told CBS News.

“We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution,” the official told the news channel.

The US has been a major supplier of weapons to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in 2022.

However, there has been a shift in the US approach towards the war after President Donald Trump took charge of his office for the second term in January.
