Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday called on all citizens, who were ready to defend the country against the Russian invasion, to come forward and said the government would issue weapons to them, media reports said.

On Thursday, the world woke up to the news of a full fledged invasion of Ukraine by Russia on all three fronts - land, air and sea.

In the past weeks, images of Ukrainian civilians undergoing basic military training were seen in media as tension with Russia escalated.

Russian attack is being considered as the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War Two.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell told reporters today: “These are among the darkest hours for Europe since the end of World War II.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned other nations against any attempt to interfere, saying it would lead to “unforeseen consequences”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian president Zelenskiy urged Russians to come out and protest against the war.

Responding to the Russian invasion, Kiev said "Ukraine will defend itself and will win".
