Washington, July 17 (IBNS): The Pentagon on Sunday confirmed that the US-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS) group has started air strikes from a Turkish air base which was suspended following the failed military coup d'etat in the country last week.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook tweeted: "After close coordination with our Turkish allies, counter-ISIL coalition air operations in Turkey have resumed."

The President of the United Nations General Assemblyon Saturday condemned the attempt on Friday to overthrow the Government of Turkey.

“I strongly condemn the attempt from groups in the armed forces to overthrow the Government of Turkey and express my sincere condolences for the lives lost during the coup attempt,” said Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft in a statement issued by his office.

According to media reports, a faction of military forces in Turkey attempted a coup on Fridaynight.

“The international community must fully support the democratically elected Government and the rule of law in Turkey,”  Lykketoft added.

In a separate statement on Saturday, the High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, condemned the “failed coup that aimed at overthrowing the legitimate Government in Turkey on Friday.”

“He expresses his support to the democratically elected civilian Government of Turkey and the legitimate leadership of the President of Turkey H.E.  Recep Tayyip Erdogan,” the statement said.
