Who is Parminderpal Singh? US ICE arrests Indian national, says he faces deportation over criminal charges

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles on Saturday announced the arrest of an Indian national with a criminal record in the United States.

The individual has been identified as 26-year-old Parminderpal Singh.

According to ICE, Singh’s criminal record includes charges of vehicle theft, grand theft, trespassing, and vandalism.

The agency said in a post on X, “He is in ICE custody pending removal.”

ICE also shared an image of Singh on the social media platform.

The development comes months after the deportation of 73-year-old Sikh woman Harjit Kaur to India in September last year, after she had spent nearly three decades in the US.

Kaur had alleged that she was denied essential medicines and was served non-vegetarian food while being held at a detention centre.

“I marked my attendance every six months. On September 8, when I went to the centre, they made me wait for two hours and asked me to sign papers. I refused without my lawyer. They said they had my fingerprints and informed me I was under arrest, but gave no reason,” she had told NDTV.

“I was not provided my medicines. I slept only four hours and had no peace. The day I was arrested, I couldn’t sit all night. I agreed to lie down when another Punjabi girl insisted, but I was unable to get up the next morning,” she said.

A vegetarian, Kaur alleged that she was served turkey and bread she could not chew, forcing her to survive on chips and biscuits during her detention.

Kaur had moved to the US 30 years ago following her husband’s death and had been living with her two sons in California’s East Bay. Her asylum plea was rejected in 2012.
