Who was Renee Nicole Good — a poet and mother of three killed in Minneapolis ICE shooting

Minneapolis/IBNS: A quiet Minneapolis neighbourhood was shaken on Wednesday after a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good just a few blocks from her home.

Authorities confirmed the shooting occurred during an immigration enforcement operation, leaving the community grieving and searching for answers.

Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, remembered her daughter as a deeply compassionate person who spent her life caring for others.

Speaking to the Minnesota Star Tribune, she described Renee as loving, forgiving and endlessly kind, adding that she touched everyone she met with warmth and generosity.

Who was Renee Nicole Good?

Renee Nicole Good lived in Minneapolis with her partner and was a devoted mother to a young child.

Family members later revealed she was also a mother of three, balancing parenthood with her creative passions.

A graduate of Old Dominion University, Good earned her English degree in 2020.

She specialised in creative writing and was recognised for her talent when she received the university’s undergraduate poetry prize for her work titled On Learning to Dissect Fetal Pigs.

University President Brian Hemphill expressed sorrow following her death, saying it reflected a troubling rise in fear and violence across the country.

A life rooted in creativity

Originally from Colorado Springs, Good co-hosted a podcast with her husband and spent her free time immersed in art, films and writing.

Her Instagram profile, believed to be hers, featured a pride flag and a heartfelt bio describing herself as a poet, wife, mother and aspiring musician experiencing life in Minneapolis.

She had previously been married to Timmy Ray Macklin Jr., who passed away in 2023 at the age of 36. The couple shared a child together.

What happened during the ICE operation?

The Department of Homeland Security stated that the incident occurred when officers were allegedly blocked during an enforcement operation.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said shots were fired after a confrontation with the woman.

Video footage shows officers attempting to open the driver’s door of an SUV.

The vehicle appears to reverse briefly before moving forward. Gunshots are then heard as the SUV collides with a parked car.

At a press conference, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed Good ignored commands to exit her vehicle and attempted to strike an ICE officer.

According to Noem, the officer was hit and later treated at a hospital before being released.

Family disputes official narrative

Good’s mother firmly denied that her daughter was involved in any protests or confrontations related to immigration enforcement.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged the public to avoid misinformation, cautioning against what he called a growing “propaganda machine” surrounding the incident.

Investigation underway

The shooting is now under investigation by the FBI and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Authorities say a full review will determine whether proper protocols were followed.

Community mourns

As investigators work to uncover the facts, friends, family and neighbours remember Renee Nicole Good not for the controversy surrounding her death, but for her art, compassion and unwavering love for her children.

Her passing has left a void felt deeply across Minneapolis, where she once wrote, dreamed and raised her family.
