Arts@CERN launches COLLIDE International Award
Geneva, Mar 11 (IBNS): Arts@CERN on Friday launched an international call for artists for the COLLIDE International Award-a new collaboration between CERN and FACT1.
COLLIDE International Award is the new partnership between CERN and FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology in Liverpool), which aims to support artistic research on fundamental physics and its impact on society.
A two-month residency programme will grant the winning artist time to explore and reflect on the cross over between artistic and scientific research at the largest particle physics laboratory in the world.
Consequently the artist will spend a one-month residency at FACT developing the winning proposal into production.
Online submissions will be open from Friday until May 23 for the artists interested in applying: http://indico.cern.ch/event/507691/
"At the nexus of art, science and technology, FACT Liverpool is delighted to be the partner to Arts@CERN for its major international residency programme, COLLIDE. Encouraging curiosity is central to our agenda, and introducing the public to experimental and open-minded artists is an amazing way to inspire creativity both within science and arts," said Prof. Mike Stubbs, Director of FACT.
For the fourth edition, COLLIDE Geneva now has a category for “digital writing”, for an artist to enter and explore the scientific atmosphere.
Funded by a joint partnership between the Republic and Canton of Geneva and The City of Geneva, Cassandre Poirier-Simon will be given the opportunity to join CERN for a three–month residency.
“While CERN focuses on an encouraging horizon in particle physics, Arts@CERN grants an artistic, cultural vision to the laboratory,” said Charlotte Lindberg Warakaulle, CERN Director for International Relations.
The ACCELERATE3 Lithuania and ACCELERATE UAE juries, announced on Friday their respective winners: Julijonas Urbonas and Aisha Juma. These two short residency awards opened last September in collaboration with Rupert Arts and Education Centre in Vilnius, Lithuania and ADMAF in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
"Having explored the human scale, currently I've become interested in the choreographic dialectics between the macro and the micro dimensions of gravity and I cannot imagine any better place than CERN to explore such topics,” said the Lithuanian artist Julijonas Urbonas.
Aisha Juma, the Emirati laureate expressed that: "Coming to CERN feels like being sent to the core of the Earth, or being minimized and asked to look at the world from that perspective. It is a thrilling position to perceive the world from."
Since 2011, Arts@CERN has flourished, binding arts, science and technology to contribute to a fast growing knowledge based culture.
“Art and science are two extraordinary ways of exploring the world and the universe about us and Arts@CERN exists to encourage dialogue and exchange between them. I am thrilled to begin our new international collaboration and welcome the three new artists in residence, who will certainly open up a new means of enquiry with which to work alongside CERN scientists,” affirmed Monica Bello Head of Arts@CERN.
