New Delhi/IBNS: The Indian government on Sunday confirmed that 909 cases of COVID-19 infected patients have emerged in the country in the past 24 hours.

Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary in the Union Health Ministry, said during the daily press briefing: "Good news is that 716 people have recovered and have been discharged so far. 74 people have been cured since yesterday."

He further said: "Our efforts are focussed on proper clinical management of positive patients, contact tracing and foolproof implementation of containment strategy."

The Ministry said India currently has 8,356 COVID-19 patients.

So far, 273 people have died in the country, the government said.

The nationwide lockdown began on March 25 to control the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

During Saturday's meeting, which was chaired by PM Narendra Modi with chief ministers indicated that the lockdown would be extended by two weeks, considering the requests of the state leaders, who preferred a longer containment period.

Several states like Odisha, Punjab and West Bengal have already extended the lockdown period till April 30.

The nationwide lockdown is scheduled to end on Tuesday. Another national address by PM Modi is expected soon.
