Mohammad Ali Park Puja committee decides to build Kerala's Murugan temple this year at their new venue

Kolkata, Sep 27 (IBNS): Catch a bit of Kerala this year at the Youth Association of Mohammad Ali Park pandal (marquee) in central Kolkata, where artist Prasanta Pal has created a 40 feet high Murugan temple and decorated it with folk art from the southern state.

Said Surendra Kr. Sharma, General Secretary, “After the huge success of Golden Jubilee year [2018], this year, we are looking forward to promote the folk art form Murugan. It is a traditional art form in which considerable importance is given to symbolism, rich detailing, bright colors and intricate drawing. It looks so genuine that people who visit the pandal will take it as a real temple. The artists have used around two lakh thermocol sheets.”

Last year, Mohammad Ali Park had constructed a Padmaavat-inspired mandap, which also featured the idols decked in traditional Rajasthani garb.

The neighbourhood Puja started in 1969 from Tara Chand Dutta Street but owing to its increasing popularity was moved to Mohammad Ali Park.

This year, after the wall of a British era underground reservoir in the park collapsed, the authorities in consultation with various government departments, decided to shift the venue owing to safety concerns.

This year, the puja will be held in the premises of the Central Avenue Fire Station.
