Prominent Kashmiri poet Farooq Nazki dies at 83
Farooq Nazki, a prominent poet, broadcaster, and a Sahitya Akademi awardee died on Tuesday at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Specialty Hospital in Katra on Tuesday morning after a prolonged illness, family sources said.
He was 83.
Nazki, a former Doordarshan and All India Radio Srinagar Director, was originally from Madar village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district and son of illustrious Kashmir poet, writer broadcaster, and teacher Mir Ghulam Rasool Nazk.
Farooq as a poet, dramatist, and broadcaster had made his mark in his youthful days. His command over both Kashmiri and Urdu language was remarkable.
Nazki started his career in 1960 as a journalist in "Zamindar" newspaper- which highlighted the problems of labour class.
A multi-dimensional person, Nazki also served as a media advisor to former J&K Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah.
Nazki won the Sahitya Academy award in Kashmiri language literature for his book of poetry, Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas (The Forests of Soot are on Fire) in 1995.
He has also won the state Cultural Academy Award for both that work and Lafz Lafz Noha.
