Will hold Andhra Pradesh govt responsible for even one fatality: SC on Class 12 exams

New Delhi/IBNS: The Andhra Pradesh government, which is keen on holding the Class 12 examination, on Tuesday received a warning from the Supreme Court as well as two days' time to decide on the matter.

The apex court said that it will hold the AP government responsible even if a single COVID fatality is reported as a result of the decision to hold examinations.

"If there is even one fatality, we will hold the state responsible... You cannot keep everything uncertain," judges told the state government.

Andhra Pradesh is yet to take the final call on the issue.

Most states as well as the Central boards have cancelled their board exams this year on account of the pandemic.

Advocate Mahfooz Nazki, who was representing Andhra Pradesh, had told the court that the state government has made a decision to conduct the examination in view of the improving Covid situation.

"Our stand has been the same from the beginning. We want to conduct the examinations only in the interest of the students' future," Education Minister A Suresh had said at an earlier hearing on June 17.

Of 28 states, six had conducted the exams, 18 states cancelled.

But four states -- Assam, Punjab, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh --- had not cancelled.

However, Assam, Punjab and Tripura also decided to cancel the exams.
