World Idli Day: Swiggy survey reveals one customer ordered Idlis worth Rs 6 lakh in a year

Idli, a wholesome dish with origins in southern India, is popular all over the country. On World Idli Day, food app Swiggy released its analysis for the occasion which revealed some interesting information about this southern delicacy.

According to the food app, it delivered 33 million plates of idlis in the last 12 months with Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai topping the cities where the item is ordered frequently.

Other cities where customers ordered Idli often are Delhi, Kolkata, Kochi, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Vizag.

However, a customer in Hyderabad broke all records by ordering maximum number of idlis. The Swiggy customer spent a whopping Rs 6 lakh for 8,428 plates.

This user ordered for family and friends and while travelling across cities like Bangalore and Chennai.

The analysis showed that idlis are most commonly ordered between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. and customers in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore, and Mumbai also order idlis during dinner time.

Plain idli is the most preferred in all cities. In Bangalore, rava idli is more popular than any other variant, while ghee/neyi karam podi idli is a popular choice in cities across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Thatte idli and mini idli are also frequently ordered across all cities.

According to the analysis, masala dosa is the most ordered breakfast item on Swiggy, followed by idlis. Customers also frequently order other dishes such as sambar, coconut chutney, karampuri, medu veda, saagu, ghee, red chutney, jain sambar, tea, and coffee along with their idlis.

The analysis also revealed the eateries in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad which customers prefer the most to order idlis. The top five places in the list are A2B-Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Bengaluru and Chennai, Varalakshmi Tiffins in Hyderabad, Sangeetha Veg Restaurant in Chennai, and Udipi's Upahar in Hyderabad.
