Acute shortage of doctors in India: Manipur Governor

| @indiablooms | Aug 01, 2022, at 10:57 pm

Imphal/UNI: Manipur Governor La Ganesan Monday said the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is the only medical college in the entire North East region to find a mention consecutively in the past four years amongst the top 50 medical institutions of India as per the NRF ranking, released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Doctors, nurses and all staff of RIMS worked very hard during COVID-19 pandemic and saved hundreds of lives in Manipur, he said.

The Governor was speaking during the inauguration of a Dental College Block at New Campus and New Modular Operation Theatre in RIMS.

He also interacted with faculty members and representatives of non-teaching staff of RIMS and heard issues faced by them and assured them to look after their issues.

Governor further said dental education occupies a place of pride in the field of medical studies.

The basic aim of the dental colleges is to provide health-oriented courses that emphasize the prevention of oral disease, he added.

As dentistry offers a satisfying, rewarding and lucrative career, it has become the subject of choice for aspiring professionals of tomorrow, he further stated.

La. Ganesan also said that in the past decade many new dental colleges have been established and still there is immense scope for dental surgeons in view of the high incidence of dental problems.

There is one dentist for every 26,000 persons in the urban areas, and only one for three lakh in rural areas, the Manipur Governor said.

India has more than 250 dental Institutions, producing 15,000 to 20,000 Bachelors of Dental Surgery (BDS) graduates every year, the Governor added.
