Amaravati to be new capital of Andhra Pradesh
Chief Minister Chandrabau Naidu has pledged that Amaravati, located on the banks of the Krishna between Vijaywada and Guntur, will be "the world's best city".
Reports said Naidu, in his efforts to meet the promise has obtained from the Singapore government the first draft of a master plan for the city based on changes he has sought, the plan will be resubmitted in a few weeks.
Last year, Telengana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh as India's youngest state with Hyderabad being designated a shared capital between the two states till 2024, after which it will belong to Telangana.
Once the capital of the Satavahana dynasty 2,000 years ago, Amaravati is famous for Buddhist sites including a stupa built during Emperor Ashoka's time.
The development of the new capital will begin with the construction of the state legislature, the secretariat or headquarters of the government, and a high court, reports quoted Naidu as saying.
The plan also envisages an international and domestic airport.
Two major expressways and other multi-lane highways will connect Amaravati to important towns.
The government plan to develop the new capital involves an estimated expenditure of Rs. 20,000 crore of which the centre has so far sanctioned only Rs. 1,500 with a promise to give more after going through the master plan.
