Guwahati, Aug 14 (IBNS) A day before Independence Day celebrations across the country, the army has foiled a major terror attack in Assam on Thursday night, officials said on Friday.

A militant belonging to Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) was killed during gun fight with security forces in Kokrajhar district, when militants were attempting to blow up the railway track in the state.

Security forces had recovered a 7 kilograms weighing IED, one 7.65 mm pistol, two magazines, two hand grenades, detonators in possession from the slain militant.

Based on intelligence input, army and police had jointly launched an operation along the railway tracks on Thursdaynight, where a militant group had tried to plant the IED to blow up the track.

"When security personnel reached the area militants had fired and exchanged bullets, in which a militant was killed on the spot though others had managed to flee from the area with the help of darkness, " an army official based in BTAD said.

Assam police has sounded high alert across the state for probable terror attack ahead of Independence Day.

"Paresh Baruah led ULFA (I), NDFB( S), KLO, GNLA militants have been trying to attack on security personnel and cause explosions in various areas in the state, " Assam DGP Khagen Sarma said.
