Assam Panchayat polls : Over 64 lakh voters to decide the fate of 35,056 candidates in second phase

Guwahati, Dec 8 (IBNS): The second phase panchayat polls in Assam will be held amidst tight security on Sunday.

A total of 64,21,518 voters will exercise their franchise in 9428 polling booths to decide the fate of 35,056 candidates contesting in the four tier 10,909 constituencies.

Over 75% of 97,45,709 voters cast their votes in the first phase of panchayat election was held on Dec 5.

According to the Assam State Election Commission, the second phase of panchayat poll will be held in 10 districts of the state.

A total of 35,056 candidates have contested for 169 Zila Parishad Member (ZPM), 895 Anchalik Panchayat Member (APM), 895 Gram Panchayat President (GPP) and 8950 Gram Panchayat Member (GPM) constituencies.

Meanwhile, over 50,000 polling personnel and more than 40,000 security personnel have been deployed in the second phase of panchayat polls and they are leaving for their respective polling booths since Saturday morning.

According to the Assam State Election Commission, 734 candidates have been declared elected unopposed including 442 candidates for the first phase and 292 for the second phase.

The counting of votes will be held on Dec 12.
