Bangladesh urges India to ‘expedite’ Sheikh Hasina's extradition amid rising tensions

Bangladesh has urged India to "expedite" the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since her ouster in 2024, amid renewed tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

The demand was raised during a meeting between Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi at the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka on Monday.

The meeting came days after Hasina held a virtual press conference on August 5, during which she criticised the government led by Rahman, prompting strong objections from Dhaka.

Dhaka seeks faster extradition process

Shahadat Shadhin, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary, said Dhaka hoped New Delhi would speed up the process of bringing Ms Hasina back to Bangladesh.

"Bangladesh hopes that India will expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina," Shadhin said after the meeting.

He added that Prime Minister Rahman had emphasised the need to create a "conducive environment" to further strengthen India-Bangladesh bilateral relations.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kobir were also present during the meeting.

Bangladesh raises Hadi killing

Dhaka also reiterated its request for India to extradite suspects allegedly linked to the killing of youth leader Osman Hadi in December 2025.

"The Prime Minister at the same time reiterated the request to extradite the suspected killers who are connected to the assassination of Shaheed Osman Hadi," Shadhin said.

Bangladeshi authorities have alleged that individuals connected to the killing fled to India.

Dhaka objects to Hasina's India-based remarks

The meeting took place against the backdrop of growing friction over Ms Hasina's August 5 virtual address.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman accused Hasina of undermining Bangladesh's justice system through her remarks and said India should ensure that its territory is not used for actions that could affect Bangladesh's state institutions.

"On August 5, Ms Hasina has undermined the justice department of Bangladesh, which is a pillar of our nation. The Government of India had allowed her to do that," Rahman told reporters after meeting the Indian envoy.

He added that Dhaka expected India to understand its concerns and said he was "somewhat reassured" following the conversation with the Indian High Commissioner.

India-Bangladesh ties under strain

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka said the two sides had "exchanged views on matters of mutual interest" with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations through a "people-centric approach".

The extradition issue, however, remains a major point of contention between the two countries.

Bangladesh has previously sought Hasina's return to face legal proceedings in the country.

India has received the extradition request but has not publicly committed to a timeline for any handover.

Tarique Rahman has two India invitations

Foreign Minister Rahman also disclosed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has received two invitations from India — one to attend the BRICS summit in September and another for a bilateral visit.

"The date has not been fixed, but an invite exists and we will look into it," he said.

The bilateral invitation was extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a letter handed over to Bangladesh by then Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on February 17, 2026.

The latest diplomatic engagement comes as both sides attempt to manage differences over Sheikh Hasina, cross-border security concerns and the broader future of India-Bangladesh relations.
