Bengal Govt to sell onions at fair price shops

Kolkata, Aug 24 (IBNS): With the wholesale and retail price of onions rocketing sky high, West Bengal government has decided to sell the daily necessity at a fair price, through its outlets, an official statement confirmed on Monday.

The State Horticulture Department has decided to sell onions through its fair price outlets and mobile vans at different markets of the city.

Soon, onions at fair price will be made available in the district markets.

The State Minister for Horticulture said that onions will be made available at a price which will be at least Rs 10-15 less than the market price.

The State Agricultural Marketing Minister is also looking into the prospects of importing onion from south India.

The Mamata Banerjee government is also taking measures to stop stockpiling of onions.

"The State Government had in the past years took similar measures to made available potatoes and other vegetables at a fair price, when the prices had rocketed sky-high due to illegal stockpiling by dishonest traders," the statement claimed.
