Chennai to experience heavy rainfall for the next two days: IMD
The IMD website said the city is going to experience 'heavy rainfall' on Dec 3-4.
The Chennai airport was shut, a bridge on the river Adyar closed as heavy rains, worst in 100 years, continued to batter parts of Tamil Nadu and its state capital on Wednesday crippling normal life while defence personnel swung into a massive rescue and relief operation battling with the unprecedented natural calamity.
In Chennai most parts of the city remained flooded leaving thousands of people marooned while the flood waters overtopped the runway of Chennai airport leading to cancellation of all flights and submerged parts of railway tracks severely hampering train services. Around 700 people are stranded in the airports.
The met department has forecast that heavy rain will continue in Chennai for a week, warning that the situation may worsen in the next 24 hours.
The PM also spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa over phone and assured her of all support required to handle the crisis in the state.
"Spoke to Jayalalithaa ji on the flood situation in parts of Tamil Nadu. Assured all possible support and cooperation in this unfortunate hour," the Prime Minister tweeted.
The Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the National Disaster Response Force are out on the streets to rescue people from their flooded homes.
Schools have been forced to close and exams have been postponed at least for this week. University exams have also been postponed.
