Cong leader Gurudas Kamat gets Women's panel notice for remarks against Smriti Irani

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IBNS) Congress leader Gurudas Kamat on Saturday got notice from women's panel for remarks against union minister Smriti Irani.

He  has been asked by the National Commission for Women to explain within a week his offensive remarks targetting Irani's humble past that have attracted much criticism.

However, Kamat  claimed that he was quoted out of context.

Speaking in Rajasthan on Thursday,  Kamat referred to  Irani as a "poncha lagane waali (one who mops floors)" in an attack that questioned the minister's credentials to have charge of the education portfolio.

"We have sent a showcause notice to Gurudas Kamat on his remarks about Smriti Irani... Have asked him to reply to this notice in a week's time,"  Lalitha Kumaramangalam, chairperson of the National Commission for Women, said.

Kamat made the remarks against  Irani while campaigning for local body elections in the BJP-ruled state.

He said :  "Her family's financial condition was not good; therefore, she worked in a hotel in Versova. Since, Smriti was only 10th pass, she used to mop floors."

Irani's party, the BJP lashed out at Kamat as did the leaders of some other political parties accusing him of disrespecting a woman and undermining the dignity of labour.
