Congress-sponsored shutdown in Bengal evokes partial response

Kolkata, Aug 18 (IBNS) A dawn-to-dusk strike called by the Congress in West Bengal on Tuesday evoked mixed response as police detained hundreds of supporters of the state's opposition party allegedly for forcing to shut business and transport.

The shutdown  was called in protest against the alleged killing of a student in a West Midnapore college and "terror and violence" by the ruling party.

Opposing it, the state government announced yesterday  that all its offices would remain open and employees should report for duty.

The strike did not have a major impact in Kolkata where most of the shops and markets remained open while state-run buses plied normally.

But  private vehicles were less to be seen on streets.

Local  train services were disrupted in certain sections of Sealdah division of Eastern Railways after Congress supporters squatted on tracks. As a result, several trains were held up.

Alleged supporters of the Congress  also blocked GT road and vandalised several buses after forcing the passengers to get down.

Almost all the offices-both government and private- functioned. Many educational institutions also remained open in the city though some  declared holiday to avoid trouble.

In certain districts the bandh had some impact.

In the  Congress stronghold of Murshidabad district, most of the  shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed.

Police arrested ten Congress supporters in Baharampur of the district  for trying to force the shutdown.

Bandh supporters clashed with the police in front of the district land reforms office. West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee President Adhir Chowdhury, who hails from the district alleged that the police were working at the behest of ruling Trinamool Congress.
