CU: University professors, students protest against attack

Kolkata, July 2 (IBNS): The professors of various universities, under the West Bengal College and University Teachers' Association (WBCUTA), and Left Front's student wings held rallies in Kolkata on Thursday to protest against the alleged Trinamool Chatra Parishad (TMCP)'s attack on agitating professors and non-teaching staffs at Calcutta University (CU) main campus.

Some activists of Trinamool Congress's student wing, in presence of TMCP's state president Ashok Rudra, on Wednesday allegedly attacked the professors and non-teaching staffs under the "Save University-Save Democracy" forum who were agitating against the abolishment of Financial Officer (FO) post at CU main campus in Kolkata's College Street area.

Some agitators, including two professors, were injured in the attack.

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee denied all allegations against TMCP.

He said on Wednesday that TMCP activists were beaten by the professors.

"Two TMCP leaders are injured and I asked the VC to submit a report on this incident," he had said on Wednesday.

CU VC Suranjan Das told IBNS, "One unrest situation happened, but now everything is under control. I will not say anything about this."

Condemning of the incident, Left Front's student wings observed an 'educational strike' in West Bengal on Thursday. They also organized a rally which started from Sealdah and ended at College Square area in the city.

The WBCUTA also held a protest march from Razabajar to College Square area. Professors and non-teaching staffs took part in it.

The VC of Calcutta University Suranjan Das met Partha Chatterjee on Thursday and submitted a report on the incident.

After meeting him, Suranjan Das said that the incident was unfortunate and unexpected.

"I never witnessed such an incident in last 10 years. I submitted a report on the issue to the education minister. I briefed the demands of the 'Save University-Save Democracy' forum to him. He told me that he will meet the agitating professors tomorrow at 1pm," he said.
