Doormats, rugs with image of Golden Temple 'sold' on Amazon, triggers outrage

New York, Dec 19 (IBNS): A prominent Sikh body protested strongly after reports emerged that doormats and rugs with the image of the Golden Temple were sold on e-commerce giant Amazon.

The body asked the e-commerce major to prohibit the sale of culturally inappropriate and offensive merchandise on their website.

In a statement published on Tuesday, The Sikh Coalition said: "The Sikh Coalition was alerted to Amazon selling doormats, rugs and toilet seat covers with the image of one the most historically significant Sikh sites – Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple). In response, the Sikh Coalition immediately contacted Amazon to request that the products be removed while detailing the culturally insensitive problems with the products and the offensive message it sends to Sikhs around the world."

"In the hours since, through community outreach, several pages have been removed from the website. However, there are still a few products remaining online and Amazon has yet to appropriately respond. Please join us in sending a direct message to Amazon explaining why these products are offensive to the Sikh community," it said.

As per Twitter page, The Sikh Coalition is a community-based organization that works towards the 'realization of civil and human rights for all people'.
