Former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh faces setback in first faceoff with Congress

Chandigarh/IBNS: Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh's first outing in his battle with ex-party Congress met with disappointment after he failed to successfully back his loyalist and Patiala Mayor, Sanjiv Sharma Bittu.

Though the Mayor managed to defeat the no-confidence motion, he had failed to prove his majority.

In a house of 60 members, 35 have voted against Bittu who was supported by 25 others.

After Singh turned rebel against his own party and eventually quitting it, 42 members had brought a vote of no confidence.

Following the rebellion, Bittu had called a general house meeting to prove his majority.

"A total of 31 votes were required to prove his confidence... he got only 25 votes... which means he lost the confidence. He, therefore, stands suspended and the senior deputy mayor will take over from him,"Braham Mohindro, the ex-officio member of the house, said as quoted by The Times of India.

Mohindro, a cabinet minister, was also deputed by the Congress to ensure the removal of Bittu.

After he was asked by the Congress top brass to quit as the Punjab Chief Minister, Singh stepped down, turned rebel and launched his own party, Punjab Lok Congress.

Congress' Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi succeeded Singh as the Chief Minister barely months before the next state polls due to be held in Feb 2022.
