Heavy rain paralyses Mumbai, kills two

Incessant rains for over 30 hours  resulted in a high tide that hit the city in the mid day on Friday flooding the sea front areas of several parts of the financial capital of the country.

According to reports, two people have died of electrocution.

Train service has been badly hit in the Central, Harbour and Western lines due to water-logging on the tracks.

Western Railway tweeted: "Suburban trains of W.Rly have been suspended again between Andheri & Churchgate due to rise in water level at Matunga Rd & at Elphinstone Rd."

Flight service has also been disrupted in the city due to heavy rains with several flights being  cancelled on Friday, reports said.

The  city's BEST buses have changed their routes because of flooding at several areas including Hindmata, Dadar, Parel, Sion, Vikhroli, Andheri, Jogeshwari and Santa Cruz.

Taxis demanded hefty charges to take a passenger in while auto rickshaws either refused services or couldn't make their way through the flooded streets.

Schools and other educational institutions in the city remained shut while thin attendance were reported from private and government offices.

The Bombay High Court has been also been shut down for the day.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that he is personally monitoring the situation. 

"At State Control Room. Discussing about situation in entire state with MRSAC Director & Disaster Mgmt Cell Director," the CM tweeted.

After his visit to the BMC offices, the Chief Minister said that the focus was on draining the water from the roads, adding that the authorities were concerned about the high tide expected later on Friday.

More rainfall has been predicted for the next 24 hours. The civic body of the city has pressed about 120 pumps into service to clear the excess water from the roads.
