Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Police will appeal seeking exemption to try the juvenile accused in the May 28 Hyderabad rape case as  adults, according to media reports.

The discretion to allow the trial as an adult lies with the Juvenile Justice Board.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand has confirmed that the police will file the appeal.

There are six accused in the rape case and four of them are minors. All of them are either from powerful political families or are said to have influential links.

One of the adults accused in the case, Omer Khan, belongs to an affluent family with strong political links while Saduddin Malik is the son of a TRS leader.

The four minor accused include the son of a TRS leader, son of a GHMC Corporator, son of a TRS corporator from Sangareddy and son of an AIMIM MLA.

The son of  AIMIM MLA  turned 18 on July 7.

The crime was committed on May 28 in Banjara Hills, a posh Hyderabad locality, where many influential people like top politicians, actors, industrialists live.

The car, in which the rape occurred, was registered as a government vehicle. It was apparently being used by a top Waqf board functionary, media reports said.
