India-Algeria defence ties get major boost: Big moves after landmark meeting in Delhi

The inaugural Joint Commission meeting between India and Algeria was held in New Delhi on May 5, where both sides discussed expanding cooperation in training, military exercises, medical collaboration, and defence industries.

“They agreed to further expand defence cooperation activities between the two countries,” a government statement said.

The two nations also signed the Rules of Procedure to oversee the implementation of India–Algeria defence cooperation, establishing a structured framework to guide future Joint Commission meetings.

The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) Amitabh Prasad and Algeria’s Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces, Kaid Nour Eddine.

The Indian delegation included officials from the three armed services, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, Department of Defence Production, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Armed Forces Medical Services, and the Ministry of External Affairs.

Defence ties between India and Algeria have gained momentum since the signing of a Defence MoU in 2024, marked by a series of high-level exchanges.

Ahead of the meeting, Maj Gen Kaid Nour Eddine paid tribute to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial. The Algerian delegation is also scheduled to engage with Indian defence industry stakeholders during the visit.
