Indian soldiers travel in first passenger train from Delhi to Srinagar

Around 800 Indian Army soldiers on Tuesday completed the full rail journey from Delhi to Srinagar, via Katra, the first time such an event took place since the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL).

The rail service was meant for those soldiers who were stuck in their location due to sickness and troubles increased when their flights to Jammu and Kashmir were cancelled amid recent conflict against Pakistan.

Sources in the defence and security establishment told The Print that the train started off from Delhi and made a halt in Katra.

The soldiers boarded a different train from Katra to reach Srinagar, the news portal reported.

It took four hours for the train to reach Srinagar from Katra.

Narendra Modi was set to inaugurate the Katra to Srinagar section last month. However, his trip was cancelled due to bad weather.

The timing of the train service movement assumes significance since the region remains tensed over the conflict between India and Pakistan following the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 which left 26 people killed.

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in reply to the Pahalgal attack, targeting nine terror hubs in Pakistan and PoK.

Pakistan launched drone and missile attacks on several Indian cities which ere neutralised by the Indian Armed forces.
