Kolkata: New Market fire brought under control

Kolkata, Jul 30 (IBNS): The fire which broke out at the old complex (Hogg Market) of Kolkata's iconic New Market on Thursday night has been brought under control around 10:30 pm.
The fire was first seen from a garment shop- Jamana Departmental Store at the flowers market area of Hogg Market at around 8:45 pm.
 
As many as 17 fire engines, police force from the New Market Police Station, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) staff and the disaster management group (DMG) rushed to the spot and firefighters fought for nearly one and half hours to arrest the fire.
 
State Minister Arup Biswas and deputy mayor of Kolkata Iqbal Ahmed also went there.
 
Biswas told IBNS, "Police and fire brigade did a great job. For their extraordinary works the fire could not spread to the rest of the market."
 
West Bengal Fire Minister Javed Ahmed Khan told IBNS: "Fire fighters have brought this major fire under control in just one and half an hour. We will investigate to know the proper reason of the fire."
 
However, no casualty has been reported so far. But the centre of the fire- Jamana Departmental Store has been gutted completely.
 
According to sources, more three fire engines are coming to the spot for cooling off process which could be continued till Friday morning.
