Meeting between LK Advani, Arvind Kejriwal cancelled

New Delhi, June 19 (IBNS): The meeting between senior BJP leader LK Advani and Delhi CM Arfvind Kejrwal, which was likely to be held on Friday, has been cancelled, media reports said.

"According to sources, the BJP was not happy with the proposed meeting and feelers were sent by Advani's house to Kejriwal to cancel the meeting. Both the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP were not happy with the Advani's statement on emergency," CNN-IBN reported.

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kejriwal on Thursday agreed with Advani over his remark that an Emergency-like situation could not be ruled in the future.

He has also asked whether Delhi will be the Centre's first experiment in imposing Emergency.

"Advani ji is correct in saying that emergency can't be ruled out. Is Delhi their first experiment?" Kejriwal tweeted.

In what is being seen as a major embarrassment for the NDA government, Advani has said  "forces that can crush democracy have become stronger."

Ahead of the 40th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency on June 25, Advani in an interview to The Indian Express said: “At the present point of time, the forces that can crush democracy, notwithstanding the constitutional and legal safeguards, are stronger."

In response to a question on what, specifically, is missing, that makes India today vulnerable to the Emergency-like situation, he said: “I do not see any sign in our polity that assures me, any outstanding aspect of leadership. A commitment to democracy and to all other aspects related to democracy is lacking.”

“Today, I do not say that the political leadership is not mature. But I don’t have faith because of its weaknesses. I don’t have the confidence that it (Emergency) cannot happen again," said the BJP founding father.
