Meghalaya : 15 miners trapped inside coal pit, rescue operations suspended
Guwahati, Dec 26 (IBNS): 15 miners are trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district since Dec 13 and their fate continues to remain unknown as rescuers continue their fight to locate them.
They are also battling the surging water level inside the 370-feet deep coal pit.
Meanwhile the Meghalaya government has suspended the rescue operations on Dec 24 because of two pumps being used have proved ineffective bringing the water level down at the coal mine.
Now, the authorities are waiting for getting high-powered pumps to flash out the water from the coal pit.
Over 100 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police are engaged in rescue operations and continued their efforts to locate the labourers since Dec 14.
According to the reports, at least 20 miners had entered the 370-feet coal mine on Dec 13, but five among them had managed to climb out after water from multiple channels flooded the coal mine.
Among the 15 trapped labourers, seven Seven labourers hail from West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya, five from Assam and three from the remote Lumthari village in East Jaintia Hills district.
The National Green Tribunal has banned unscientific and unsafe coal mining in Meghalaya since April, 2014.
Recently, the illegal coal mining mafia group had attacked Meghalaya’s social activist and president of the Civil Society Women's Organisation (CSWO) Agnes Kharshiing and her associate, when they reportedly gone to capture some photographs, video of illegal coal mining in East Jaintia Hills district.
On the other hand, the family members of the victims urged the Meghalaya government to find out the missing persons as soon as possible by taking necessary action.
