Militant killed in J&K encounter

Srinagar, Feb 6 (IBNS) Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday claimed they have gunned down one Hizbul Mujahideen militant in Gund-pora village of Pulwama district,about 35 km from Srinagar.

According to reports, the encounter started after security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation after receiving inputs about some militants in the village.

“When the security forces closed in on the house where the militants were holed up, they came under heavy fire, results fierce gunbattle for an hour,” senior police officer told IBNS.

During one-hour gunfight, one local militant identified as Rakib Bashir, a former special police officer or SPO, was killed while another associate fled from the encounter site.

Police said Bashir had served in the police for a brief period before joining the militant  group Hizbul Mujahideen.
