Modi govt paints a rosy picture, Sonowal contradictory views: Tarun Gogoi

Guwahati, Dec 11 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday said that Union Minister and BJP State President Sarbananda Sonowal's statement that the State’s economy has become stagnant has been proved wrong by the BJP-led NDA Government's report that gave Assam the sixth position in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
In a statement, Gogoi said the report brought out by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India ranked Assam in the sixth position in GSDP. Assam’s GSDP growth (at current prices) in 2014-15 stands at 15.26 per cent.

“Government of India’s latest report is a pointer to the fact that the State Government has been able to improve upon the GSDP parameter vis-a-vis developmental activities with the active help and cooperation of the people,” Gogoi said, adding that the sixth position bagged by Assam among 33 States is a matter of pride for Assam and its people.

Gogoi said that the slew of economic measures adopted by the State Government through fiscal discipline and management have enabled the State to compete with other developed ones.

“Assam has fared better than developed States like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Haryana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh,” Gogoi said.

The Assam CM said that barring Madhya Pradesh, no BJP-ruled State could perform better than Assam.

“Barring Madhya Pradesh, Assam has fared better than other BJP-ruled States. The latest report indicates that Assam is marching towards the path of progress and development in the right direction. Sonowal has unleashed a misinformation campaign against the present Government to hide the failure of the BJP. Despite injustice meted out by the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre to Assam and its people, the State is progressing on the path of progress and prosperity. With the help of its own resources and proper utilisation of Central funds, the State has been able to improve upon GSDP in the process surpassing several advanced States,” Gogoi said.
