Our government is for the poor: Modi to BJP MPs
New Delhi, Apr 19 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said his government is for the benefit of the people as he presented a report card of the same after he assumed the office.
While addressing a workshop "Garib Kalyan Yojnaye: Its Effective Implementation and Role of MPs" for BJP lawmakers on the various pro-poor programmes of the government, Modi said there is a need to empower the poor.
"Since the day I became Prime Minister, this has been a government for the poor. You place your trust in the people and no one else," he told the MPs.
"I want that rural areas get more purchasing power. But the money
spent should not be unproductive. In the villages you will now begin to see the changes. The purchasing power of the villages will increase and it will boost the economy. We have announced that farmers with over 33 per cent crop loss will be eligible for compensation," Modi said.

Launching attack on media and other citics, Modi said, "Some people have decided that they won't speak good of our government. But why waste our time on them. We should make our work available to the people who want to listen and know. Do not worry about whether media shows your face. Focus on connecting with the farmers."

He said that 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' scheme is targetted for the minority girls who are deprived of education and basic rights
"If my Muslim daughters are uneducated, our country cannot develop. I am the Prime Minister, and as Prime Minister, I demand something - beti bachao - no more female foeticide," he said,
He said, "If I had said farmers will get a pension, I am lauded. But if I say everyone will be entitled to pension, no one cares."
Modi also urged capable citizens to give up their gas subsidy.
"We save 200 crore rupees if 4 lakh people give up their subsidy. This money will not go into the government's treasury. This money will go towards providing gas cylinders to the poor people," he said.
Modi also said that he does not work hard for the people to gain popularity but it is a pre-requisite for him.
"I don't work for the poor to get highlighted in the media. I work because if I don't, I won't be able to sleep," he said.
The focus of the workshop of the BJP MPs is how to work on the government's "pro-poor" initiatives for the people.
It is also deliberating upon the ways to counter Congress's opposition over the land bill.

The one-day workshop coincides with the Congress's 'Kisan Rally' at the Ram Leela Ground here on Sunday, which will be addressed by party vice president Rahul Gandhi.
