Over 3 lakh women leading the fight against COVID-19 in Assam

Guwahati/IBNS: Along with others, over 3 lakh women of Assam are leading the fight against the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and helping the state to combat the dreaded virus outbreak.

From Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA), Anganwadi Workers to Self Help Groups (SHGs) – over 3 lakh women are directly involved in the fight against COVID-19 and working as the footsoldiers in this battle.

45-year-old Namita Talukdar – a housewife and resident of Borbari area in Assam’s capital city Guwahati is now leading 10 SHGs and they are making masks.

“There are 10 members in our Self Help Group (SHG) and we are preparing masks. We have distributed over 2000 masks among the people who couldn’t effort to buy a mask from market. We are also selling masks at a reasonable price,” Namita Talukdar said.

She also said they have started to make masks from February last.

On the other hand, Gitimallika Baidya – a cultural activist has made various colourful masks and distributed it among the tea garden labourers at Barbaruah tea garden in Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Gitimallika Baidya – originally hailing from Biswanath district and presently living in Dibrugarh district-is also trying to aware the tea garden labourers about hygiene.

According to the Assam government, over 30,000 SHGs in the state are working to make masks, conducting awareness camps in different parts of the state.

Not only the Self Help Groups (SHGs), over 1.20 lakh Anganwadi Workers, Helpers and 44,000 ASHA workers are working as the footsoldiers in this battle in Assam.

Assam state Revenue and Disaster Management minister Bhabesh Kalita said that, over 3 lakh women of the state are involved in the battle against COVID-19.

“Over 30,000 SHGs, 1.20 lakh surveillance workers means Anganwadi workers, helpers, 44,000 ASHA workers of the state are involved in fight against Coronavirus. It is very pleasant for Assam that a major section of women are involved with such kind of activities,” the Assam minister said.

Assam has reported 34 positive cases for COVID-19 so far and one among the patients was died.
