PM Modi meets top BJP leaders over Bihar debacle
New Delhi, Nov 9 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met Bharatiya Janata Party's top brass comprising 12 leaders at the party headquarters in the national capital to analyse the party's humiliating defeat at the Bihar Assembly polls.
Following the meeting, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the mediapersons that the BJP respected the Bihar mandate.
He also hoped that the new government will bring development.
"The main reason for defeat seems that in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the RJD, JDU and the Congress were fighting independently. We were wrong in thinking the Grand Alliance won't be able to consolidate votes due to other small and regional parties," Jaitley said.
Meanwhile, BJP chief Amit Shah presented a preliminary assessment of the Bihar debacle to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, reports said.
Results of the Bihar Assembly elections announced on Sunday gave a stunning blow to the BJP-led NDA as it settled for a mere 58 seats in the 243-member house, while the Nitish Kumar-led grand alliance comprising the JDU, RJD and the Congress swept to power with 178 seats securing two-thirds majority.
PM Modi personally led the campaign for the BJP which went aggressive to capture power.
The Bihar defeat will hamper PM Modi's push to pass economic reforms for which he needs to win most state elections in the next three years to gain full control of parliament.
The government is in a minority in Rajya Sabha which is selected by state assemblies.
